The University of Sussex has awarded an honorary doctorate to its alumnus, and Tata Group executive Noel Tata, in recognition of his contributions to global business leadership.
Tata, who graduated with a degree in economics from Sussex in 1978, received the honorary degree from vice-chancellor professor Sasha Roseneil during a ceremony in Mumbai on Jan. 30.
Reflecting on the honor, Tata said, “My time studying at Sussex was a rich and stimulating intellectual experience that had a formative influence on me. It is a privilege to be presented with an honorary degree from the University and I would like to thank Sussex for this recognition.”
With a career spanning over four decades, Tata has held key leadership positions within the Tata Group, significantly shaping its retail and business strategies. As chairman of Trent, a Tata-group retail company based in Mumbai, he played a pivotal role in expanding its portfolio, which includes Westside, Star Bazaar, and Zudio.
He also holds board positions across multiple Tata companies, including Tata International, Voltas, and Tata Investment Corporation, and serves as vice chairman of Tata Steel and Titan Company Limited. In 2024, Tata was appointed chairman of the Tata Trusts, the philanthropic arm of the Tata Group.
Vice-chancellor Roseneil praised Tata’s leadership, stating, “Noel is a highly respected leader in the corporate world and a champion of ethical business practices, and Sussex celebrates the positive difference that he has made to the Indian economy and to the lives of individuals and communities across India and beyond.”
