Ohlone College’s Lytton Center for History and the Public Good and the Ohlone Sikh Student Association hosted ‘Homecoming: An Evening of Storytelling and Reflection Featuring Panjabi Sikh Voices’ at the Newark Center.

The event brought together community members, students, and artists for an evening of cultural exchange and reflection. Sikh poet and writer Harman Kaur, known for Phulkari and Call Me Home, delivered the keynote address, sharing insights on Panjabi culture and the immigrant experience.

In addition to Kaur’s address, the evening featured storytelling from Panjabi artists and students, discussions on cultural identity, and vendor exhibits showcasing creative expressions. A highlight of the event was the raffle giveaway of 10 signed copies of Call Me Home, offering winners a personal keepsake from the evening.

“Events like this remind us of the power of storytelling in building connections and understanding across cultures,” said Ohlone College president/superintendent Charles Sasaki.

The college’s interim program manager of career services and industry relations, Raj Rai, and program supervisor of student pathways program, Harshdeep Singh Nanda, shared, “Unique events like these draw the community to our college – we have people who have flown in from Canada and all over the U.S. to attend. The Panjabi Sikh community is deeply rooted in the Bay Area, yet there are so few opportunities for us to come together in such an intentional way.”

The event concluded with the College extending its gratitude to the Ohlone College Foundation and the Office of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion for sponsoring the event.
