The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) has flagged alarming instances of Indian nationals being lured by dubious recruitment agencies through fake job offers to Southeast Asian countries, including Cambodia, Myanmar, and Lao PDR. These individuals are often coerced into participating in cybercrimes and fraudulent activities at scam centers in these nations.
Minister of State for External Affairs, Kirti Vardhan Singh, stated that while the exact number of Indians trapped is unknown, the government has taken proactive measures to address the issue. Efforts led by Indian embassies in the region have resulted in the rescue of 2,358 Indian nationals so far—1,091 from Cambodia, 770 from Lao PDR, and 497 from Myanmar.
The government has prioritized the safety and well-being of Indian citizens abroad, employing diplomatic channels and collaboration with local authorities for rescue operations. Indian missions are accessible through walk-ins, emails, emergency helplines, and grievance portals like MADAD and e-Migrate.
To counter fake job rackets, advisories and awareness campaigns have been launched across media platforms. Additionally, a list of 3,094 unregistered recruitment agents has been published on the e-Migrate portal, with regular updates based on complaints and inputs from missions.
The Ministry of Home Affairs has also established the Indian Cybercrime Coordination Centre (I4C) to combat cybercrime comprehensively. Awareness efforts include SMS campaigns, social media alerts, radio broadcasts, and cyber safety weeks in collaboration with states and union territories.
Singh stressed the need for job seekers to verify recruitment agents and companies thoroughly to avoid falling prey to fraudulent schemes.
