The Indian government has voiced its concern over the escalating incidents of human rights violations against Hindus and other minorities in Bangladesh, revealing that over 2,400 such incidents have been reported in recent months.
Responding to questions in Parliament, Minister of State for External Affairs, Kirti Vardhan Singh, disclosed that the Indian government has repeatedly raised the issue with the Bangladeshi government.
“Government of India has taken note of incidents of human rights violations of Hindus and other minorities in Bangladesh and raised the issue with the Government of Bangladesh on various occasions,” Singh stated.

The minister detailed that, according to updated information, more than 2,400 minority-related incidents have been reported from August 5, 2024, to March 23, 2025. This figure significantly exceeds earlier reports. In December 2024, the Bangladeshi government had announced the arrest of 70 people in 88 cases related to attacks on minorities. However, subsequent police investigations in January 2025 verified a considerably higher number, 1,254 incidents.
India has urged Bangladesh to conduct thorough investigations into these incidents and ensure that perpetrators of killings, arson, and violence against minorities are brought to justice. The Indian government has also emphasized that such acts should not be justified as “politically motivated.”
“It is expected that Bangladesh will thoroughly investigate these incidents and bring all perpetrators of killings, arson and violence against minorities to justice without justifying any of these killings or arson as ‘politically motivated’,” Singh said.
This matter was reiterated during a meeting between India's External Affairs Minister and Bangladesh’s Foreign Adviser, Md. Touhid Hossain, on February 16, 2025.
The Indian government has underscored that the primary responsibility for protecting the lives and liberties of all Bangladeshi citizens, including minorities, lies with the Bangladeshi government itself.
"The primary responsibility for the protection of life and liberty of all citizens of Bangladesh, including minorities, rests with the Government of Bangladesh," Singh asserted.
The rising number of reported incidents has prompted increased scrutiny and diplomatic engagement between the two nations, highlighting the ongoing concerns about the safety and security of minority communities in Bangladesh.
