Payal Kapadia’s All We Imagine As Light loses out at Golden Globes

Her critically acclaimed film was nominated for two categories at the 82nd edition of the Golden Globes Awards.

Indian filmmaker Payal Kapadia’s film, All We Imagine As Light, missed out on the coveted trophy at the 82nd Golden Globe Awards held on Jan.5. 

Her critically acclaimed film was nominated for two categories: Best Director (Motion Picture) and Best Motion Picture (Non-English Language). It however lost the Best Motion Picture – Non-English Language category to Emilia Pérez. Emilia Pérez is a 2024 Spanish-language French musical crime comedy film written and directed by Jacques Audiard. 

While it didn't take home the prize, All We Imagine As Light made history as the first Indian film to be nominated in this category.

On the other hand, she also lost the Best Director category to Brady Corbet for The Brutalist. Kapadia was just the second Indian director to be nominated in this category at the Golden Globes after Shekhar Kapur, who made the cut for the English film, Elizabeth.

The ceremony was held at the Beverly Hilton Hotel in California.

Regardless of the loss at the awards this year, Kapadia's storytelling continues to earn global praise. Her appearance on the Golden Globes red carpet was equally significant, blending cultural heritage with modern elegance. She wore a striking black silk jumpsuit designed by Payal Khandwala, known for its understated luxury and contemporary design. The outfit, from Khandwala’s Autumn-Winter 2024 collection, was crafted from ethically sourced handwoven matka silk from Eastern India. Featuring brocade detailing on the pockets and the designer’s signature loop neck, the jumpsuit pays homage to traditional Indian textiles while embracing a modern silhouette.

All We Imagine As Light, an Indo-French co-production starring Kani Kusruti, Divya Prabha, and Hridhu Haroon, explores themes of personal struggle and emotional awakening. The narrative follows nurse Prabha and her roommate Anu as they confront their desires during a trip to a beach town. The film made headlines last year as the first Indian entry in the Cannes Film Festival competition section in 30 years, where it won the prestigious Grand Prix.

All We Imagine As Light has also been longlisted for three categories at the prestigious 2025 British Academy of Film and Television Arts (BAFTA) Awards. The BAFTA longlist, revealed on Jan.3, includes All We Imagine As Light in the categories of Best Director, Best Original Screenplay, and Best Film not in the English Language.
