Penn State honors Dastidar for statistical excellence

Dastidar is among six distinguished alumni honored for exceptional contributions.

The Penn State Eberly College of Science has recognized Indian-American statistician Madhumita Ghosh-Dastidar with its 2025 Outstanding Science Alumni Award for her contributions to statistics and data science. 

The award, presented last week at RE Farm Café, honors alumni with significant professional achievements and a commitment to mentorship.

Kolkata-born Dastidar, earned her master’s and doctoral degrees in statistics from Penn State in 1996 and 1999 respectively. Currently serving as a senior statistician and data scientist at RAND, her work has influenced public health policies, including evaluations of neighborhood-level interventions for diet and health, HIV-positive patient outcomes, and military sexual assault assessments.

A leader in her field, Dastidar is the 119th president and an elected fellow of the American Statistical Association (ASA). She has served in various roles within the ASA, including chairing the Health Policy Statistics Section, co-chairing the International Conference on Health Policy Statistics, and contributing to diversity and mentorship initiatives.

Her efforts to advance statistics and public policy have earned her numerous accolades, including recognition as one of the Top 20 Women in Statistics and Data Science. She has also been honored with the Distinguished Alumnus Award from Penn State’s Department of Statistics.
