Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who arrived in the United States for a two-day visit at the invitation of President Donald Trump, met with US Director of National Intelligence (DNI) Tulsi Gabbard on Feb.12. Gabbard was confirmed for the role earlier the same day.
During the meeting, Prime Minister Modi congratulated Gabbard on her confirmation and discussed various aspects of the India-US partnership. He later shared details of the meeting on X, stating:
"Met USA’s Director of National Intelligence, @TulsiGabbard in Washington DC. Congratulated her on her confirmation. Discussed various aspects of the India-USA friendship, of which she’s always been a strong votary."
The Prime Minister warmly reminisced about his past interactions with Gabbard. Their discussions focused on strengthening bilateral intelligence cooperation, with an emphasis on counter-terrorism, cybersecurity, emerging threats, and strategic intelligence sharing. They also exchanged perspectives on regional and global developments of mutual interest, reaffirming their commitment to a secure, stable, and rules-based international order.

Gabbard, often mistaken as being of Indian origin due to her Hindu faith, was born in the US territory of American Samoa and raised in Hawaii and the Philippines. Her mother, Carol Porter Gabbard, who was raised in a multicultural household, developed an interest in Hinduism. All her children were given Hindu names—Bhakti, Jai, Aryan, Tulsi, and Vrindavan.
Despite briefly being placed on a watchlist by the Transportation Security Administration, Gabbard was officially sworn in as the Director of National Intelligence at the White House on Feb.12.

Upon his arrival in the United States, Prime Minister Modi emphasized his commitment to deepening the India-US Comprehensive Global Strategic Partnership: “Our nations will keep working closely for the benefit of our people and for a better future for our planet.”
"I warmly recall working with President Trump during his first term, and I am sure our talks will build on the ground covered then," he said, reflecting on past collaboration between the two leaders.
Since November 2024, Modi and Trump have spoken twice over the phone, reinforcing diplomatic ties.
Before traveling to the United States, Prime Minister Modi completed a three-day visit to France, where he met with US Vice President JD Vance. His visit to Washington, DC, marks another significant step in advancing India-US relations.
