Priyanka Chopra, Mindy Kaling-backed film nominated for Oscars

Priyanka Chopra Jonas called the nomination “an incredible moment,” stating, “This film is a beautiful reminder of the power of storytelling—how it can shine a light on love, family, and resilience in the most authentic way.”

Anuja, a short film backed by Priyanka Chopra Jonas, Mindy Kaling, and Academy Award winner Guneet Monga Kapoor, has been nominated for Best Live Action Short Film at the 97th Academy Awards. 

The nominations, announced on Jan. 23 by Bowen Yang and Rachel Sennott, place Anuja alongside Alien, I’m Not a Robot, The Last Ranger, and A Man Who Would Not Remain Silent in that category.

Directed by Adam J. Graves, Anuja tells the story of a nine-year-old girl working in a garment factory alongside her sister, exploring themes of resilience and family. The film has been produced in collaboration with Salaam Baalak Trust India and Shine Global, with additional support from Netflix.

Mindy Kaling also expressed her pride, saying, “#AnujaTheFilm is headed to the Oscars! A story of resilience, sisterhood, and hope—we’re incredibly honored to be nominated for Best Live Action Short Film. Huge congrats to the brilliant filmmakers and, of course, the incredible young actresses Sajda Pathan and Ananya Shanbhag.”



Monga Kapoor highlighted the importance of the story, saying it represents “the resilience of children facing difficult circumstances across the world.” Mindy Kaling also expressed her pride, noting the film’s message of hope and sisterhood.



The 97th Academy Awards will take place on March. 30  in Los Angeles.
