Yale alumnus Indra Nooyi and her husband Raj Nooyi have donated $1 million to Yale School of Medicine’s Department of Surgery to establish the Raj and Indra Nooyi Cancer Research Fund.

The fund, directed by Mehra Golshan, professor of surgery (oncology), and Parisa Lotfi, assistant professor of radiology and biomedical imaging, will support pioneering research aimed at reducing the toxicity and burden of breast cancer treatment.

The Indian American couple are well-known philanthropists, who have a long history of supporting Yale, including the Schools of Management and Public Health. Their latest gift will specifically focus on advancing breast cancer research through a multidisciplinary approach that integrates medical and surgical fields.

Golshan praised the couple’s contribution, highlighting its impact on developing innovative treatment strategies. “They are providing groundbreaking research funding that will allow for the most optimal, patient-centered care and decrease the burden of breast cancer treatment.”

“We have spent time together on numerous occasions discussing the challenges of conducting cutting-edge research when funding is limited through traditional grant mechanisms,” said Golshan. “Their desire to support both cancer research and surgery at YSM sparked this initiative.”

The research will explore techniques such as molecular-based imaging and image-guided methods to reduce re-operations and improve treatment outcomes. Golshan’s team is also working on minimizing the intensity of treatment for low-risk conditions like Ductal Carcinoma In Situ (DCIS) and improving outcomes for women affected by lymphedema after surgery.
