Democrat Raja Krishnamoorthi has been re-elected to the US House in Illinois' 8th Congressional District, securing 57.1 percent of the vote against Republican challenger Mark Rice, who received 42.9 percent, according to the Associated Press.
Known for his focus on healthcare and economic reform, Krishnamoorthi will continue representing a diverse constituency that includes portions of Chicago’s northwestern suburbs.
The election underscored a sharp divide in policy perspectives, with Krishnamoorthi championing progressive policies while Rice stressed conservative values. Illinois' 8th Congressional District, traditionally a Democratic stronghold, saw strong voter turnout, reflecting a high level of engagement in this congressional race. Krishnamoorthi’s victory reaffirms his popularity among constituents, who have supported him since his initial election to Congress.
Since 2017, Raja Krishnamoorthi has represented Illinois' 8th Congressional District. First elected in 2016, he secured re-election in 2024 with a 57.1 percent vote share. Currently, Krishnamoorthi serves as the Ranking Member of the House Select Committee on Strategic Competition with China. He is also a senior member of the Oversight and Intelligence Committees, vice-chair of the LGBT Equality Caucus, and a co-founder of the Congressional Solar Caucus.
Throughout his career, Krishnamoorthi has championed legislation aimed at supporting middle-class families, including initiatives for social security and affordable education. A former Special Assistant Attorney General in Illinois and Policy Director for President Barack Obama, he brings a background rooted in public service and law. Krishnamoorthi earned a law degree from Harvard Law School and graduated summa cum laude from Princeton University.
Born in India and raised in Buffalo, New York, Krishnamoorthi overcame financial hardships to achieve academic and professional success. Prior to Congress, he served as Illinois' Deputy State Treasurer, building a foundation for his commitment to public service.
