Hoboken Mayor Ravinder S. Bhalla has announced his candidacy for New Jersey’s 32nd Assembly District, which includes Hoboken and parts of Jersey City, marking the latest step in his political career.
Bhalla made the announcement Jan.15 on social media, stating his commitment to addressing key issues such as climate change, affordable housing, and reducing costs for working families.“I am so excited to announce my candidacy for New Jersey’s 32nd Assembly District,” Bhalla wrote on X (formerly twitter). “Together, we accomplished a lot for Hoboken residents. Now, I’m running to keep on getting big things done in Trenton for our working families.”

Together, we accomplished a lot for Hoboken residents. Now, I’m running to keep on getting big things done in Trenton for our working families.
The announcement follows Bhalla’s earlier decision not to seek re-election for a third term as Hoboken mayor, with his tenure set to conclude at the end of 2025. In that announcement, Bhalla reflected on his time in office, calling it “the privilege of my lifetime” and signaling his intention to continue serving the public through a different role.
Bhalla, a Democrat, has been a prominent figure in New Jersey politics. He made history in 2017 as the state’s first Sikh mayor and previously served on the Hoboken City Council for nine years. His tenure as mayor has been marked by initiatives to improve pedestrian safety, expand green spaces, and enhance climate resilience, as well as efforts to bolster Hoboken’s infrastructure against flooding.
Born in Passaic and raised in Woodland Park, Bhalla comes from a family of immigrants who built a successful business in New Jersey. A civil rights attorney by profession, Bhalla holds degrees from UC Berkeley, the London School of Economics, and Tulane University Law School.
This is not Bhalla’s first bid for state office. In 2024, he ran in the Democratic primary for New Jersey’s 8th congressional district but lost to Rep. Rob Menendez. His current campaign for the 32nd Assembly District is expected to leverage his extensive experience in local government and his ability to deliver tangible results for constituents.
