Congressman Raja Krishnamoorthi met with U.S. State Department officials on Monday, Nov.4, 2024, to discuss initiatives aimed at protecting religious minorities in Bangladesh, specifically focusing on the safety and rights of Hindu communities.
“Today, I was briefed by the State Department on their efforts to protect religious minority rights, especially those of Hindus, in Bangladesh,” Krishnamoorthi stated. He stressed that the State Department considers the protection of Hindus and other religious minorities in Bangladesh to be a “top priority” and raises the issue in nearly every high-level diplomatic discussion with Bangladeshi authorities.
The briefing also covered steps being taken to enhance Bangladesh’s civilian security forces. “The State Department is actively working to bolster Bangladesh’s civilian security force with training specifically related to safeguarding religious minority rights,” Krishnamoorthi explained.
In his statement, he further urged the State Department to make more public information available about its activities in Bangladesh and to release data on the treatment of religious minorities, calling for greater transparency to aid efforts in eliminating religious violence and discrimination.
“I appreciate the State Department’s attention to this important issue and will follow up again in the coming weeks,” the Congressman said, affirming his commitment to monitoring the progress of these efforts.
