The Congressman criticized recent proposals by House and Senate Republicans, who are considering cuts to Medicaid, which could reduce funding by up to $2 trillion, or nearly a third of the program’s total budget.

Rep. Raja Krishnamoorthi delivered a passionate defense of federal safety net programs, including Medicaid and SNAP (Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program), which are at risk of severe budget cuts. Speaking to the proposed cuts, which could affect American citizens, Krishnamoorthi invoked a deeply personal connection to the safety net, recounting how his own family relied on such programs in times of hardship.

Krishnamoorthi, who came to the United States with his family at just three months old, shared the challenges his family faced during the 1973 recession when his father lost his income. "We were allowed to survive and flourish thanks to the generosity of the people of the United States, its government, and the existence of these safety net programs," Krishnamoorthi said.
