Congressman Raja Krishnamoorthi (D-IL), one of the few Hindu Americans serving in the US Congress, welcomed the US Department of Justice Community Relations Service’s (CRS) new initiative to foster engagement with Hindu American communities.
“I am pleased that the U.S. Department of Justice finally heard the cries of so many Hindu Americans who often feel underrepresented, misunderstood, and frankly, prejudiced against,” Krishnamoorthi said in a statement.
The newly launched “Engaging and Building Relationships with Hindu American Communities” program aims to address hate crimes and strengthen relations between Hindu Americans and the law enforcement.
Krishnamoorthi emphasized the significance of the initiative, noting that it was the result of persistent advocacy by Hindu American leaders and organizations. He praised the Hindu American Foundation for its contributions, stating, “I want to specifically applaud the work of key organizations, like the Hindu American Foundation, whose critical input led to the formulation of this program.”

However, Krishnamoorthi acknowledged the challenges ahead, particularly with the upcoming transition in the White House. “While the creation of this program is welcomed news, we have so much work ahead to ensure it’s successful. As the Department of Justice transitions control from the Biden Administration to the Trump Administration, it is especially critical that this program remain a priority in 2025 and beyond,” he said.
According to CRS, the program is a comprehensive five-part, four-hour training designed to educate law enforcement, schools, religious and secular communities, and organizations on fostering a better understanding of Hindu culture and experiences. The training includes:
CRS highlighted that the program was developed in collaboration with major Hindu American organizations and is based on peer-reviewed historical research and current data. It will be offered free of charge to interested communities across the country.
“CRS is proud to partner with major Hindu American organizations to produce this program and looks forward to continuing that partnership in offering this program to all communities in America,” the department stated.
