Indian-American Congresswoman Pramila Jayapal has won re-election to serve Washington’s 7th Congressional District, defeating her Republican challenger Dan Alexander in the November 2024 election.
Jayapal expressed gratitude to her supporters, writing on X, “From the bottom of my heart, thank you! Our campaign, and our movement, has always been about lifting people up, fighting for poor and working people, and bringing all of us together. I’m so proud to represent Washington’s 7th district and I look forward to joining together to continue fighting for progress and opportunity for all."
Jayapal, who has held the position since 2017, continues to represent a district known for its strong Democratic lean. Covering most of Seattle, excluding parts of the Chinatown-International District, Central District, Beacon Hill, and Rainier Valley, the district also spans Burien, White Center, and reaches north into Shoreline.
Jayapal’s re-election was preceded by a commanding lead in the August primary, where she received 79.9 percent of the votes, with Alexander trailing significantly at 7.8 percent. As one of the most reliably Democratic-leaning districts in Washington, District 7 has consistently supported Jayapal’s progressive agenda.
In Congress, Jayapal serves as the chairwoman of the Congressional Progressive Caucus, advocating for policies focused on social justice, economic equality, and climate action.
She made history as the first Indian-American woman elected to Congress, and before her Congressional tenure, she represented District 37 in the Washington State Senate, which includes parts of eastern Seattle.
