Indian Americans, including Michigan Congressman Shri Thanedar, are facing increased racism online following President-elect Donald Trump's nomination of Sriram Krishnan, an Indian-born entrepreneur, as senior White House AI policy advisor.
Krishnan’s support for the H-1B visa program, which allows skilled workers to work in the U.S., has sparked division within Trump’s Make America Great Again (MAGA) base. Thanedar, who expressed his support for the program, also faced backlash, with many Republicans urging him to return to India.
The Congressman has responded strongly to these attacks stating, “To the MAGA Republicans telling me to go back to India, my message is clear: I’m not going back, and I’ll fight this racism and xenophobia everywhere it presents itself.”

To combat racism and protect immigrant communities. The lawmaker had previously introduced a bipartisan resolution condemning Hinduphobia, aiming to foster greater inclusivity and understanding. The resolution introduced seeks to denounce Hinduphobia and other forms of racial discrimination.
He emphasized the need for collective action to combat prejudice, stating, “We must ensure America remains a land of opportunity, free from hate and fear.” The Hindu American Foundation, voiced its support for Thanedar, tweeting, “We stand with you, Shri Thanedar!”
The controversy highlights a divide in the MAGA movement. While tech leaders like Elon Musk and Vivek Ramaswamy support skilled immigration, others see it as a threat to American jobs. Trump’s recent support for the H-1B program has also upset some of his own followers.
