Indian American Congressman Shri Thanedar (D-MI) called for the impeachment of President Donald Trump, citing the administration's refusal to comply with a unanimous U.S. Supreme Court order as a clear violation of the Constitution.
The Supreme Court, in a 9-0 decision, directed the Trump administration to facilitate the return of Kilmar Armando Abrego Garcia to the United States to receive constitutionally mandated due process.
Abrego Garcia, who was mistakenly deported to El Salvador despite prior judicial protection from removal, is now imprisoned in the country’s high-security facility, CECOT. His deportation, based on what critics describe as scant evidence of alleged gang affiliation, has raised serious legal and humanitarian concerns.

“This must be a red line,” said Thanedar. “Otherwise, we risk Donald Trump continuing to defy the Constitution in his own interest, rather than the interest of the nation.”
The Congressman argued that the administration's deliberate non-compliance with the highest court's directive constitutes a "high crime" under Article II, Section 4 of the U.S. Constitution. He warned that the precedent set by ignoring judicial authority undermines the system of checks and balances fundamental to American democracy.
“Donald Trump and members of his administration are deporting people with limited evidence and no due process to horrific mega prisons in a foreign nation,” Thanedar added. “We must take action now.”
Abrego Garcia had been living and working in the U.S. with routine immigration check-ins since 2019. Despite a court order halting his deportation, the Trump administration proceeded with his removal, reportedly in retaliation against oversight efforts and under the broader guise of anti-fraud measures.
“We cannot allow this obvious authoritarian power grab to continue. I urge my colleagues on both sides of the aisle to stand up for the Constitution and the American people and join the call for impeachment,” Thanedar said, urging lawmakers across party lines to uphold constitutional governance and support impeachment proceedings.
