Rice University names Sanjoy Paul as executive director of innovation hub

Sanjoy Paul, formerly of Accenture, will lead the Rice Nexus to drive innovation and industry partnerships.

Rice University has named artificial technology strategist Sanjoy Paul as the executive director of the Rice Nexus, the university's premier innovation hub located in the Ion, Houston’s new innovation district. 

The Rice Nexus, set to open this fall, will offer cutting-edge facilities for prototyping, testing, and launching new ventures by Rice faculty and students. It aims to bridge the gap between academia and industry by fostering partnerships with corporate, government, and venture capital firms, a statement from the university said.

“I am grateful for the opportunity to join Rice University’s Office of Innovation as the executive director of the Rice Nexus, where our collective work will help shape the future of technology,” Sanjoy said. “Together, we aim to elevate Houston’s standing as a global leader in innovation by translating groundbreaking research into real-world applications."  

Sanjoy brings a wealth of experience to the role, having led global research and development initiatives at companies like Bell Labs, Wipro, Infosys, and most recently, Accenture. His work has focused on advancing technologies such as AI, robotics, 5G, and digital twins. 

Chief innovation officer and vice president of innovation at Rice, Paul Cherukuri, praised Sanjoyl’s appointment, stating, “I am thrilled to welcome Dr. Sanjoy Paul to lead the Nexus’ efforts in advancing innovation across Rice and the Ion.  I am also deeply impressed by his extraordinary ability to organize teams to solve complex industrial-scale problems. Sanjoy will undoubtedly propel us toward Rice’s goal of creating impactful solutions for the benefit of the world.” 

Sanjoy holds a bachelor’s degree in electronics from the Indian Institute of Technology, Kharagpur, a doctorate in electrical engineering from the University of Maryland, and an MBA from the Wharton School of Business. 

A fellow of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE), Sanjoy has been recognized for his contributions to AI, machine learning, networking, and the Internet of Things. With 95 granted patents, his innovations have impacted industries such as manufacturing, energy, health care, and space technology.

The Rice Nexus will span 10,000 square feet across two floors in the Ion building, contributing to the university’s mission of driving innovation.
