‘Girls Will Be Girls’, produced by Richa Chadha and husband Ali Fazal under Pushing Buttons Studios, has won the prestigious John Cassavetes Award at the 2025 Film Independent Spirit Awards.
This marks the first time an Indian film has received the honor, a milestone for independent storytelling from the country.
The John Cassavetes Award is presented to the best feature made on a budget of under $1 million, recognizing fearless, low-budget filmmaking. ‘Girls Will Be Girls’ won the award over other nominees, including ‘Big Boys’, ‘Ghostlight’, ‘Jazzy’, and ‘The People’s Joker’.
Fazal wrote on his Instagram: “What a way to bring it home…proud of the team.
Directed and written by Shuchi Talati, the film follows the coming-of-age journey of 16-year-old Mira (Preeti Panigrahi), whose rebellious awakening is intertwined with her mother’s (Kani Kusruti) unfulfilled coming-of-age experiences. Set in an elite boarding school, ‘Girls Will Be Girls’ explores themes of identity, repression, and self-discovery.
The film had its world premiere at the Sundance Film Festival, where it won two awards - the Audience Award: World Cinema Dramatic award and Preeti Panigrahi won the World Cinema Dramatic Special Jury Award for Acting, and later received multiple honors at the Mumbai Film Festival (MAMI).
It was released on Prime Video India on Dec.18, 2024, to critical acclaim, with many praising it as one of the best women-led coming-of-age films to emerge from India.
