Pennsylvania's Lehigh University has announced that Richard Verma, former U.S. Ambassador to India and Deputy Secretary of State for Management and Resources, will serve as its inaugural President’s Distinguished Fellow starting Feb.1.

In his new role, Verma, a 1990 Lehigh alumnus and former trustee, will engage with students and the broader university community throughout his six-month fellowship, drawing on his extensive experience in government, diplomacy, and international relations, a university statement noted.

During his term, Verma will mentor students, lead discussions on critical national and global issues, deliver a public lecture, and offer his perspective on leadership in complex times. He will make appearances on the Bethlehem campus as well as host programs in New York City and Washington, D.C.

President Joseph J. Helble emphasized the importance of Verma’s appointment, stating, “Rich Verma’s exceptional career in government, diplomacy, and international relations brings a wealth of knowledge to our campus,” he said. “His ongoing engagement with our students has already inspired many, and this fellowship will provide our community with further opportunities to learn from his expertise. His insights will deepen our understanding of the most pressing national and global issues and inspire the next generation of leaders.”

“I’m very excited to be back on campus and reconnect with the Lehigh community over the coming months,” said Verma. “Lehigh has been a key part of my life for more than 35 years. The University has been with me every step of the way. I’m grateful to have this chance to engage with students, faculty and staff to discuss a really dynamic time in the international landscape," he added.

With a career spanning public service and the private sector, Verma has held a variety of high-profile roles. In addition to his tenure as Deputy Secretary of State, he served as Assistant Secretary of State for Legislative Affairs and National Security Advisor to the Senate Majority Leader. He also led global public policy efforts at Mastercard as general counsel. Additionally, as a veteran of the U.S. Air Force, Verma has earned military honors, including the Meritorious Service Medal and Air Force Commendation Medal. He attended Lehigh on an Air Force ROTC scholarship.

According to the university, the fellowship emphasizes Lehigh University’s commitment to equipping students to navigate the complexities of a rapidly changing world. By inviting distinguished leaders like Verma to share their expertise, the university continues to enrich its academic environment and provide a platform for meaningful dialogue on national and global issues.
