Indian cricketer Rishabh Pant has been nominated for the Laureus World Comeback of the Year Award, marking a significant milestone in his return to the sport after a life-threatening car accident.
Pant, a wicketkeeper-batsman, suffered multiple injuries, including ligament tears and fractures, in a crash on December 30, 2022, while driving to his hometown in Uttarakhand.

The accident left his career in jeopardy, forcing him to undergo multiple surgeries and an intense rehabilitation program that kept him away from competitive cricket for over a year.
After months of recovery, Pant defied all odds to make a triumphant return to the Indian Test squad in early 2024. His comeback was remarkable, as he contributed significantly to India’s Test series victory, demonstrating his batting and wicketkeeping abilities.
“My journey back to competitive cricket was incredibly challenging, so when the moment eventually arrived, the culmination of a long mental and physical battle, was extremely fulfilling,” Pant said, as quoted by Olympics.
“Being nominated for the Laureus World Comeback of the Year Award is very special to me and an acknowledgement to the efforts of everyone involved in my comeback, right from my family, the BCCI, doctors, medical team, support staff, trainers and the fans,” he added.
Pant's nomination places him alongside other well-known athletes such as Caeleb Dressel, Lara Gut-Behrami, and Marc Márquez, all of whom have overcome adversity to return to their peak.
The Comeback of the Year award is given to a sportsperson or team who has battled through injury, illness, adversity, or setbacks and made a triumphant return to the sporting stage. The Laureus World Sports Awards will be held in Madrid on April 21, 2025.
