Khan launched a nonprofit online learning platform, Khan Academy in 2008, which has since grown to serve over 180 million registered users in 190 countries. His journey into education began in 2004 when he started tutoring his cousin remotely.
The demand for his teaching methods quickly expanded, prompting him to leave his job as a hedge fund analyst in 2009 to dedicate himself entirely to online education.
Johns Hopkins University president Ron Daniels highlighted Khan's impact, stating, "The innovative approach to education that Sal Khan brought to life more than 20 years ago has reimagined the learning experience for students worldwide.”
Daniels further connected Khan’s work to the university’s mission of bringing knowledge to the world. “In embodying that mission, Khan offers a stirring example to our graduates who grew up using Khan's technologies and now seek to make their own lasting and meaningful impact."
Khan Academy has provided students, parents, and teachers with accessible educational resources, and many in the Class of 2025 have relied on its tools throughout their academic journey, the university said in a statement.
Beyond online learning, Khan is now at the forefront of integrating artificial intelligence into education. In his book Brave New Words: How AI Will Revolutionize Education (and Why That's a Good Thing), he explores AI’s potential to transform classrooms by enabling more personalized learning experiences.
The commencement ceremony will celebrate approximately 1,450 undergraduates, 60 graduate students, and 130 doctoral candidates, alongside 11,360 total graduates from Johns Hopkins in 2025.
