The University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences (UAMS) College of Medicine has announced Sanjaya Viswamitra as chair of its radiology department.
Viswamitra, a seasoned expert with more than two decades of service and leadership in the field, has served as interim chair since August 2024.

As chief of emergency radiology, Viswamitra has played a critical role in advancing clinical and academic programs at UAMS since he joined in 2001. His work in cardiac imaging, body and musculoskeletal MRI, and nuclear medicine has earned him recognition nationally and internationally.
Under his guidance, the Division of Emergency Radiology was formally established in 2023, further cementing UAMS’ leadership in the specialty.
“Viswamitra has done a great job leading our radiology programs for the past eight months, following more than 23 years of previous service in the department. Widely recognized for his expertise in cardiac imaging and his longtime work in body and musculoskeletal MRI and nuclear medicine, Viswamitra has been instrumental in building our clinical and educational endeavors in emergency radiology,” said Steven A. Webber, dean of the College of Medicine and UAMS executive vice chancellor.
A medical graduate of the Jawaharlal Institute of Postgraduate Medical Education and Research in India, Viswamitra completed fellowships and residencies at top U.S. institutions, including the University of Pennsylvania and Thomas Jefferson University Hospital. He is board certified in both radiology and neurophysiologic monitoring.
He has authored over 60 publications and held key roles in organizations such as the Radiological Society of North America and the Indian Association of Cardiac Imaging, where he currently serves as executive chair.
