Sewa Atlanta's 2024 gala raises over $500,000 for social programs

The funds raised will directly benefit these programs, which also include disaster relief efforts and food drives aimed at alleviating hunger.

The Atlanta chapter of humanitarian nonprofit Sewa International raised over $500,000 to support its wide array of community initiatives during its Dec. 7 gala.

The event, attended by more than 250 community leaders, volunteers, and supporters, who celebrated the organization’s growing impact and mission to serve vulnerable populations.

Madhav Durbha, president of Sewa Atlanta, and vice president Raj Radhakrishnan kicked off the evening by reflecting on the organization’s achievements. “Through the expansion of the Sewa AmeriCorps Afterschool Tutoring Program, free health clinics, and food distribution initiatives, we’ve been able to address critical community needs,” Durbha stated. “Tonight, we celebrate the collective efforts that make these programs possible.”

Keynote speaker Mohammed K. Ali, co-director of the Emory Global Diabetes Research Center (EGDRC), highlighted the global diabetes crisis, calling for interdisciplinary collaboration to address this escalating public health issue. “This is not just a medical challenge—it’s a societal one that demands action from all sectors,” Prof. Ali remarked.

The evening also featured an awards ceremony recognizing outstanding contributions to Sewa’s mission. Honorees included Sophie and Sid Mookerji of the Mookerji Foundation, Paul Lopez, Esteban Alarcon, Sreeni and Madhavi Gangasani, Ravi Ponangi, and Bhikubhai Patel. Special recognition was given to volunteer Vivek Srivatsav for his exceptional leadership in community service.

Attendees were treated to a cultural showcase, including an Indian classical dance by Saganika Mukherjee and music recitals by Anaga Jaswani and Neeti Patak. Each guest received an autographed book by Padma Bhushan awardee Dr. Jagdish Sheth and a tree kit, symbolizing Sewa’s commitment to sustainability.
