Shaila Saini, an international student from Brampton, Ontario, won the Rowan Center for Innovation and Entrepreneurship’s (RCIE) 2024 Idea Challenge earlier this month, earning $4,000 to expand her sustainable beauty brand, Lushious Beauty.

A junior entrepreneurship and marketing dual major at Rowan University, Saini founded Lushious Beauty in 2020 with her mother, both trained makeup artists. The company, which currently offers synthetic silk eyelashes and eyeliner in 15 colors, focuses on sustainability, diversity, and high-quality cosmetics.

The Rowan Center for Innovation and Entrepreneurship (RCIE), housed within the Rohrer College of Business (RCB), organizes the annual Idea Challenge and other events to support student entrepreneurship. Saini’s pitch was enhanced by Stephanie Sam and Gagan Sandhu, Exercise Science majors who acted as creative directors.

Saini is president of Rowan’s Collegiate Entrepreneurs Organization (CEO Club), which provides mentorship and networking opportunities for aspiring entrepreneurs.

RCIE director Jessica Vattima praised Saini’s perseverance stating, “She competed in the 2023 New Venture Expo and 2023 Rohrer New Venture Competition. She didn’t place in the expo but earned an Honorable Mention. She went on to be accepted into the 2024 AccelerateRU program and put what she learned back into her business. Then, she won the 2024 Idea Challenge”

Vattima highlighted the competition’s interdisciplinary appeal, noting that 50 teams from across Rowan participated, judged by nearly 100 faculty members.
