Indian-American political consultant, Shasti Conrad, chair of the Washington State Democrats, has been appointed associate chair of the Democratic National Committee (DNC).

Conrad, the first Indian-American woman to chair a major state party, expressed her gratitude for the appointment. “I am honored and proud to be named associate chair of the Democratic National Committee alongside U.S. Representative Joyce Beatty and Labor Caucus chair Stuart Applebaum,” she said. “I thank our Chair, Ken Martin, for his faith in me and his recognition of the amazing work our state parties do to elect Democrats up and down the ballot.”
Emphasizing the importance of these new leadership appointments, Martin said, “The DNC is thrilled to announce a new slate of leaders whose depth and breadth of experience will support the Democratic Party in holding the Trump administration accountable and fighting for working families. At such a critical moment, we are excited to have experienced, aggressive operatives who are ready to roll up their sleeves and defend Democratic values up and down the ballot.”
In her new role, Conrad aims to bring Washington State’s political model to the national stage. “I look forward to using my new role as DNC associate chair to help the Democratic Party become more like Washington State and less like Washington, D.C.,” she said.
Her appointment drew praise from political leaders, including Rep. Pramila Jayapal (D-WA), who congratulated Conrad in a tweet. “Congrats to Washington State’s own, @ShastiConrad, on being named DNC associate chair! I know you’ll continue to help build and grow our party to lift up poor and working people everywhere.”

Under Conrad’s leadership, Washington was the only state that did not shift toward Republicans in the 2024 elections. She credited this success to “authentic candidates, popular economic policies, and year-round organizing.”
Conrad has worked with three Nobel Peace Prize winners—Malala Yousafzai, President Barack Obama, and Kailash Satyarthi. She previously served as a senior staff assistant in the Obama White House and played key roles in multiple presidential campaigns. She also made fundraising history in Washington State, raising nearly $9 million in her first term as party chair.
She was named one of the 40 Under 40 by the American Association of Political Consultants and one of the most influential figures in Seattle politics by Seattle Met Magazine.
In addition to her political work, Conrad has led award-winning digital and media campaigns. In 2021, her team won multiple awards, including from the American Association of Political Consultants, the W3 Awards, and the Davey Awards, for their work in livestream productions. In 2022, she and her team were nominated for a regional Emmy for long-form content focusing on diversity and inclusion.
Conrad earned her bachelor’s degree in sociology and international studies from Seattle University and later completed a master’s in public affairs and international development at Princeton University.
