Shawn Mendes emerged as the showstopper on Day 1 of the third edition of Lollapalooza India in Mumbai. Among the standout performances on Mar. 8, Canadian pop icon Mendes captivated the audience not only with his music but also with a gesture that resonated deeply with Indian fans.
In a memorable moment during his 90-minute set, Mendes took the stage wearing an Indian cricket team jersey adorned with Virat Kohli’s name and number, and sparked a thunderous response from the crowd.
Expressing admiration for the country's cricketing spirit, Mendes addressed the audience, “India, I know you have a big, important cricket game tomorrow. Good luck. I hope everything goes well for you.”
His appearance in the jersey coincided with India’s Champions Trophy 2025 final on Mar. 9 against New Zealand, adding a unique cultural dimension to the music festival’s opening day. The gesture was widely lauded across social media platforms and further strengthened the artist’s connection with his Indian audience.
This marked Mendes’ first visit to India, during which he spent several days exploring Mumbai’s vibrant streets and engaging with the local community. He was seen visiting Colaba Causeway, shopping for traditional footwear, and surprising fans with an impromptu performance of ‘Señorita’ at a local music academy, moments that quickly went viral online.
The third edition of Lollapalooza India commenced in Mumbai with a dynamic and eclectic lineup of international and Indian artists. The event was held at Mumbai’s Mahalaxmi Racecourse from Mar.8 to Mar.9.
