Prominent Sikh organizations in the United States on Feb.10 have issued an urgent appeal to President Donald Trump, calling for immediate action against foreign governments that intimidate and threaten Americans, particularly Sikh Americans.
The appeal was jointly made by the American Sikh Caucus Committee, the American Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (AGPC), and the Sikh Coordination Committee East Coast (SCCEC).
“We are tax-paying Americans who want all Americans safe on American soil. No foreign government should be allowed to invisibly invade our country and intimidate our citizens,” said Pritpal Singh, Founder of the American Sikh Caucus Committee. “We bleed red and back the blue, but right now, our community is being targeted. We need action.”
The appeal comes as President Trump prepares to meet Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi this week. Sikh organizations are urging Trump to hold Modi accountable for what they describe as the targeting of Sikh Americans.
"The message is clear," said Himmat Singh of the SCCEC, alleging, "India needs to stop threatening Americans, whether directly, like in the Modi gang’s foiled Nikhil Gupta plot, or indirectly with rhetoric from non-governmental organizations allied with the Indian government."
Nikhil Gupta, an Indian national, is currently in custody in New York on charges of attempting to hire a U.S. federal agent to assassinate Sikh American leaders. The case has drawn significant attention due to its alleged links to Indian officials close to Modi. In November 2023, U.S. prosecutors charged Gupta in connection with a plot to kill at least four Sikh leaders in North America, including Gurpatwant Singh Pannun.
Sikh leaders also raised concerns about ‘Indian media narratives’, which they claim are misleadingly portraying Sikhs in America as being detained by U.S. immigration authorities and falsely labeling them as terrorists. They argue that such tactics serve to discredit Sikh diaspora groups and undermine their credibility.
In their appeal, Sikh organizations have urged President Trump to ensure that the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) and the U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS) take proactive measures to protect Sikh Americans from foreign threats.
"The invisible invasion of foreign agents into the U.S. is a growing national security crisis, testing American sovereignty and threatening the public at large," the groups warned.
As the Trump administration reshapes national security policies, Sikh leaders are also calling for the appointment of a dedicated liaison within the National Security Council to oversee efforts to counter foreign threats against American citizens.
Beyond the executive branch, these organizations plan to collaborate with Congress to push for stronger legislative safeguards against foreign influence and alleged targeted violence.
“This is about protecting our democracy and our citizens. We urge President Trump to stand with us in ensuring that the rights and security of all Americans are upheld,” said Gudev Singh of AGPC.
The Sikh American community emphasized that their call for action extends beyond their own community, highlighting that all Americans should be protected from foreign interference and threats on U.S. soil.
