South Dakota State University (SDSU) has appointed Indian American agricultural scientist Sen Subramanian as the dean of the College of Natural Sciences.
Subramanian, who has been serving as interim dean since June 2024, and associate dean for research in the College of Natural Sciences since 2022, was selected following a national search.
“I am very excited to have Dr. Subramanian continue his career at South Dakota State University as our next dean of the College of Natural Sciences,” said Dennis Hedge, provost and vice president for academic affairs at SDSU.
Hedge praised Subramanian’s leadership and his vision for advancing interdisciplinary education and research, highlighting his role in supporting SDSU’s pursuit of R1 university status under the Carnegie Classification for the highest levels of research activity.
Subramanian joined SDSU in 2009 and has been integral to the establishment of two National Science Foundation-funded research centers at SDSU and has led research on symbiotic nitrogen fixation to enhance agricultural sustainability, securing $9.3 million in grant funding.
“I am so pleased and grateful for the opportunity to lead this wonderful college with a lot of talent. My goal is to help our amazing team of students, faculty, and staff lead natural sciences education and research in and for the region,” Subramanian said.
With 60 peer-reviewed publications cited over 4,500 times, Subramanian has trained 22 graduate and 26 undergraduate research students. Subramanian has received numerous accolades, including the National Science Foundation CAREER award and the F.O. Butler Award for Excellence in Research.
He holds a bachelor’s degree in agriculture and a master’s in biotechnology from India, a doctorate in biology from the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology, and completed postdoctoral training at the Danforth Plant Science Center and Washington University in St. Louis.
