Spain has extended the validity of its job seeker visa from three months to one year to address the labor shortage. This visa validity extension will be implemented from May 2025.

The announcement was made by Spanish Migration Minister Elma Saiz on Nov. 19, alongside a plan to regularize the status of 300,000 undocumented migrants each year through 2027.

The new regulation aims to address Spain's shortage in the domestic labor market and aging population by adapting its migration policies. With a need for 250,000 workers, the extended job seeker visa gives foreigners more time to find employment and transition to work permits and residency. Currently, around 70,000 Indians, including non-resident Indians, live in Spain and may benefit from this change.

This visa validity extension will allow foreign job seekers a year to look for jobs and employment. This will further make it easier for the migrants to transition to permanent residency.

Minister Saiz said that the new regulation ”represents a balance between extending and protecting the rights of migrants and the legal rigor and attention to Spain's needs”.

If successful, the initiative could grant up to 900,000 people residency and work permits over the next three years, offering a pathway to legal employment for thousands already living in Spain.

In addition to the job seeker visa extension, Spain is introducing reforms that will ease the path for international students. Under the new regulations, students on study visas will soon be allowed to work up to 30 hours per week, providing them with greater financial flexibility and supporting Spain’s need for skilled labor.
