Global humanitarian and spiritual leader Sri Sri Ravi Shankar will deliver the keynote address at the inaugural World Meditation Day event hosted by the United Nations at its headquarters in New York on Dec. 20.
The event comes in light of the United Nations General Assembly’s unanimous resolution to designate Dec. 21 as World Meditation Day, acknowledging meditation’s significance in enhancing mental health, fostering peace, and encouraging global harmony.
Themed “Meditation for Global Peace and Harmony,” the event will bring together senior UN officials, diplomats, and international representatives. The keynote will highlight the transformative power of meditation to address modern challenges like stress, conflict, and societal disconnection.
"The recognition of meditation by the United Nations is a profound step forward. Meditation nurtures the soul, calms the mind, and offers a solution to modern challenges," Ravi Shankar said.
Following the UN address, Ravi Shankar will lead a live global meditation event, “World Meditates with Gurudev,” on Dec. 21. The event, marking the Winter Solstice, aims to unite millions worldwide in a moment of shared reflection and renewal.
As the founder of the Art of Living Foundation (AOLF), Ravi Shankar has spent over four decades promoting meditation’s benefits across 180 countries. AOLF’s humanitarian initiatives include trauma-relief programs for war veterans, at-risk youth, and survivors of disasters. Its founder’s mediation efforts have contributed to peace-building in conflict zones, including Sri Lanka, Iraq, and Colombia.
