India has appointed senior Indian Foreign Service (IFS) officer, Srinivas Gotru, as the next Ambassador of India to the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) as outgoing ASEAN Ambassador Jayant Khobragade takes on a new diplomatic role.
A 1997-batch IFS officer, Gotru is currently serving as Joint Secretary in the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA). With a distinguished career in diplomacy, Gotru has previously represented India at the United Nations, bringing extensive expertise in multilateral relations.
His appointment is seen as a significant step in strengthening India’s ties with ASEAN, underlining the country’s commitment to regional cooperation.
Jayant N. Khobragade, who is currently India’s Ambassador to ASEAN, has been appointed as the next Ambassador of India to Poland. Khobragade, an IFS officer from the 1995 batch, has served as India’s representative to ASEAN with distinction.
The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) confirmed the move in an official release, noting Khobragade’s extensive experience in international diplomacy.
India’s engagement with ASEAN has been strengthening over recent years, focusing on enhancing cooperation in trade, investment, security, and defense.
ASEAN, a grouping of 10 member countries, including Indonesia, Malaysia, the Philippines, Singapore, Thailand, Brunei, Vietnam, Laos, Myanmar, and Cambodia, remains a vital regional partner for India.
Over the past few decades, ASEAN-India relations have evolved from a sectoral dialogue partnership in 1992 to a full dialogue partnership by 1995, and later to a strategic partnership in 2012.
India’s engagement with ASEAN continues to grow, with annual summits and increased collaboration across various sectors, including trade, investment, security, and defence. India’s participation in key ASEAN-led forums, such as the East Asia Summit and the ASEAN Defence Ministers' Meeting Plus, underscores the strengthening of regional cooperation.
As ASEAN continues to navigate geopolitical challenges, including territorial disputes in the South China Sea, India’s diplomatic efforts play a crucial role in enhancing regional dialogue and fostering a secure, prosperous, and integrated Asia-Pacific.
The United States, another major dialogue partner of ASEAN, continues to play a significant role in the region’s strategic and economic landscape. Celebrating 47 years of relations with ASEAN, the US has reaffirmed its commitment to the bloc’s centrality in the Indo-Pacific region, supporting ASEAN's regional vision and stability through cooperation on trade, digital infrastructure, and maritime security.
Since 2002, the US has provided over $14.1 billion in economic, health, and security assistance to ASEAN countries, making it a vital partner for the region. Washington’s investments have focused on clean energy, digital economy integration, and disaster preparedness, with Vietnam, Indonesia, and the Philippines being the largest beneficiaries of US development finance initiatives.
