Sumiti Mehta became the first Indian American woman elected to the Natomas Unified School District Board of Trustees in Sacramento, California on Dec. 13, 2024. Her election marks a significant milestone for the Indian American community in the city. State Senator Angelique Ashby, administered the oath of office, making the event even more memorable.
Raised in India, Mehta moved to the United States with her husband in 2007. She has been an active member of the Natomas community since 2009, collaborating with district administration, teachers, classified employees, and parents to support disadvantaged students.
Mehta says, “As an immigrant, mom, parent, and a woman of color, I intimately understand the hurdles faced by parents who must become fierce advocates for their children. My transformation from an anxious parent with a heavy accent to an established youth advocate has deeply influenced my dedication to this cause.”
Her dedication to education and community service has been evident through her roles as a member of the NP3 School Board, a former City of Sacramento Parks and Recreation Commissioner for Natomas, and a board member of the North Natomas JIBE and the National Women Political Caucus (NWPC - SAC).
In addition to her board memberships, Mehta has served on various Natomas Unified School Committees, including the Community Engagement Initiative, School Site Council, Parent Advisory Committee, and the Citizens Bond Oversight Committee for Measures J and L.
Her community involvement extends to volunteering as a Reading Partners Tutor, contributing to ABC 10 Digital Series "Moms Explain All" and "Three Moms and a Dad," and organizing after-school enrichment classes such as Art Club, Chess Club, and Handwriting Club.
