Swagata Banik named dean of DePerro School of Health Professions
In his new role, Banik will be responsible for advancing health equity and education.

Indian American academic leader and researcher, Swagata Banik, has been appointed dean of St. Bonaventure University’s (SBU) Dennis R. DePerro School of Health Professions. He will assume his role on January 21, 2025.
Currently the Medical Mutual endowed chair for Public Health And Population Health at Baldwin Wallace University in Ohio, Banik brings over a decade of leadership experience. His roles at Baldwin Wallace included dean of Graduate Education and Research, chair of Public Health and Prevention Sciences, and director of the Center for Health Disparities Research and Education.
“People here who had a chance to meet him were so impressed with Dr. Banik, not only for his wide range of expertise in the health professions, but for the passion he conveyed when discussing the initiatives that matter most to him. His research on health disparities among marginalized communities couldn’t be better aligned with our Franciscan mission,” said David Hilmey, SBU provost.
Commenting on his new role, Banik said, “Inspired by Bonaventure’s mission of compassionate service, I am committed to creating a culture where service and compassion are at the heart of health care education, empowering our students to make a meaningful impact in the lives of those they serve.”
Banik’s research focuses on stigma and discrimination in health care. He has served as principal investigator on federally funded studies examining social determinants of health and building community partnerships to advance global health equity.
His immediate priorities include enhancing faculty development, strengthening collaborations, and supporting students in their academic and service endeavors. Long term, he aims to position the DePerro School as a leader in health education and innovation.
Banik pursued his M.Sc and Ph.D from Shivaji University, India and post-doc from Cleveland State University.
