Tamil-Canadian actress Maitreyi Ramakrishnan has been confirmed as a new addition to the cast of "Freaky Friday 2," as Disney officially begins production on the highly anticipated sequel to the 2003 body-swap classic, reported Deadline.

“Quite the freaky announcement on a Monday if I do say so myself,” the 22-year-old actress wrote on Instagram.

Ramakrishnan gained fame after her role in Mindy Kaling’s 2020 Netflix series, "Never Have I Ever”, where she portrayed Devi, an Indian-American teenager navigating high school and her social life. She was just 17 when she landed the role via an open casting call, earning widespread acclaim for her performance. Additionally, she voiced Priya in the 2022 animated film "Turning Red”.

"Freaky Friday 2" will feature a multigenerational twist, continuing the story years after the original film's characters, Tess (Jamie Lee Curtis) and Anna (Lindsay Lohan), experienced their body-swapping ordeal. Anna, now a mother herself with a daughter and a soon-to-be stepdaughter, will once again face the challenges of blended family life, while Tess and Anna may discover that history can indeed repeat itself.

The original "Freaky Friday”, released in 2003, grossed over $160 million worldwide and introduced audiences to the characters of Tess Coleman, a single mother and psychiatrist, and her rebellious teenage daughter, Anna. Their constant disagreements led to a magical body swap after a mysterious fortune cookie incident, forcing them to live each other's lives for a day.

The film is based on Mary Rodgers' children's book of the same name, which was first adapted into a 1976 film starring Barbara Harris and Jodie Foster as the mother-daughter duo.

Mark Harmon, Chad Michael Murray, Christina Vidal Mitchell, Haley Hudson, Lucille Soong, Stephen Tobolowsky, and Rosalind Chao will also be returning alongside Lohan and Curtis in the sequel.
