Tharoor-led panel urges clarity on NRI status, expansion of voting rights

A parliamentary committee, led by Congress MP Shashi Tharoor, has released a report highlighting critical issues concerning Non-Resident Indians (NRIs), calling for urgent reforms to address definitional ambiguities and expand voting rights.

The report, presented to Parliament, revealed a significant concern regarding the lack of a standardized definition for "NRI" across various government acts and state legislations. "This multiplicity of definitions has a potential for multiple interpretations which in turn impacts the decision-making process and accessibility of services," the committee stated. They urged the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) to establish a unified definition to eliminate confusion and ensure consistent application across all relevant legal frameworks.
