Three IITians recognized as University of Maryland ECE Department’s Distinguished Alumni

The awards, presented annually to alumni nominated by ECE faculty, was conferred on Nov. 15 at an event celebrating their achievements.

The University of Maryland’s Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering (ECE) has announced the recipients of its 2024 Distinguished Alumni Awards, recognizing outstanding contributions in academia, industry, and innovation. 

This year’s honorees include four distinguished professionals, three of whom are alumni of the Indian Institutes of Technology (IIT). The awards, presented annually to alumni nominated by ECE faculty, was conferred on Nov. 15 at an event celebrating their achievements.

Archan Misra

Vice provost (research) and Lee Kong Chian chair professor at Singapore Management University, Misra earned his Ph.D. in electrical engineering from UMD in 2000 and was nominated by professor John Baras.

An alumnus of IIT Kharagpur, he has pioneered innovative smart city solutions in Singapore, including energy-efficient wearable devices like WiWear and PABLO. His public contributions include serving as scientific advisor to Singapore's Ministry of National Development and a member of AI Singapore's Management Committee. 

Misra’s efforts have been recognized with Singapore’s National Public Administration Medal (Silver). He has authored over 150 publications, received multiple best paper awards, and was named an ACM Distinguished Member in 2021.

Arun Raghupathy

Co-founder and chief technology officer of NextNav Inc., Raghupathy received his Ph.D. from UMD in 1999 and was nominated by Professor Ray Liu. The IIT Madras alumnus, leads NextNav’s efforts in advancing 3D geolocation and positioning, navigation, and timing (PNT) technologies.

Raghupathy’s research has resulted in over 50 issued patents and contributions to critical GPS backup solutions that enhance urban safety and infrastructure. His previous roles at Qualcomm and Texas Instruments further underscore his impact on GPS and cellular modem technologies, shaping advancements in smartphone and emergency response systems.

Pavan Turaga

Director of the School of Arts, Media, and Engineering at Arizona State University, Turaga completed his Ph.D. in 2009 at UMD under the mentorship of professor Rama Chellappa. 

Turaga, an IIT Guwahati alumnus, is an expert in integrating engineering with arts and media, fostering interdisciplinary research in machine learning, imaging, and interactive media arts. His research achievements include an NSF CAREER Award and multiple IEEE Best Paper Awards. 

Turaga’s collaborative media projects, such as “The Air Around Us,” have garnered public attention for innovative applications of technology in social and environmental issues.
