The outgoing Canadian Prime Minister, Justin Trudeau, has declared that he will conduct a Cabinet retreat in the Outaouais region of Quebec on Jan. 21 and 22, a day following Donald Trump's assumption of office for his second term as President of the United States on Jan. 20.
Trudeau has been treading cautiously on US turf, as Donald Trump has refused to budge from his earlier stand of levying a 25 percent tariff on all imports from Canada and Mexico. Trump has also been maintaining that there is nothing that the US wants from Canada.
Several Canadian Cabinet ministers and Premiers have been frequenting the US in their endeavour to buy peace over the vexed issue of new tariffs.
Ranj Pillai of Yukon, the second Canadian Premier of Indian descent after Ujjal Dosanjh, who held the fort in British Columbia over two decades ago, is anticipated to be a member of the entourage that arrives on American soil on Feb. 12 to advocate for Canadian rights.
Doug Ford, Premier of Ontario, who also chairs the Canadian Premiers Committee, will unveil plans on Jan. 16 that Canadians need to put up unitedly and strongly to counter the challenges posed by Donald Trump’s tariff proposals. Ford said that the new US tariffs would cost Canadian provinces 4,00,000 to 5,00,000 jobs besides impacting the federal and provincial economies adversely.
Realising the gravity of the situation, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has been consulting his Cabinet colleagues and Premiers to respond in an effective and telling manner to Donald Trump‘s threats. After his recent visit to the US, where he met some top business leaders, he has now decided to hold a Cabinet Retreat in Quebec on January 21 and 22.
“Our government is unwaveringly focused on protecting and defending Canadian interests. With the threat of tariffs from the incoming United States administration, Team Canada will use expanded capabilities to strengthen Canada’s relationship with the U.S., protect Canadian investment and jobs, and make unequivocally clear the mutually beneficial relationship our two countries share,” Justin Trudeau said in his message while announcing the Cabinet Retreat.
A Press statement from the office of Justin Trudeau said, “With the threats of tariffs from the incoming United States administration, Cabinet will protect and defend Canadian interests, strengthen Canada’s relationship with the U.S., and make unequivocally clear the mutually beneficial trade and security relationship the two countries share.
“Cabinet will build on Canada’s strong relationship with its closest ally to advance shared priorities. This includes bolstering cross-border trade, reinforcing our supply chains, and creating jobs on both sides of the border.
“Canada’s recent $1.3 billion border security plan – backed by new investments in expanded personnel, cutting-edge technology, and increased law enforcement co-ordination – is a testament to our commitment to the shared security and prosperity of Canadians and Americans alike,” the statement said.
