In the lead-up to the U.S. presidential elections, Sam Mathew, a former Democrat from Michigan, voiced strong support for Donald Trump, describing him as a "proven leader."
Mathew, who now identifies as a conservative, highlighted Trump’s leadership qualities and track record in comparison to his democratic opponent Kamala Harris.
In an interview with New India Abroad, Matthew argued that Harris' experience as a prosecutor did not equate to effective leadership. “She was picked because she was considered a black woman and became the vice president,” he remarked. “We have no idea what we’re getting into with her.”
In contrast, he was confident that Trump could replicate and expand upon his successes from 2016 if re-elected. In Michigan, especially days before the election, the momentum was on Trump’s side, he claimed.
“The campaign is doing a very good job, getting a lot of volunteers to work the field. I think it’s going to be a good victory day for Trump,” Matthew Said. According to him, key issues like jobs in the automotive industry and border security are top concerns for Michigan voters, alongside inflation, which he believes will improve with a strong job market.
Mathew, who transitioned from the Democratic to the Republican Party, also reflected on the Indian American community's political leanings. “It’s hard to gauge the Indian community’s stance, as many believe the Democratic Party is for immigrants,” he noted.
However, he encouraged the community to consider the Republican Party’s stance on legal immigration and conservative values. “Overall, I think the Republican Party is better for the Indian community.”
Matthew Anticipates that the border will be secured, energy prices will be reduced, and the cost of living will be reduced if Trump is elected, as he believes these are critical areas for the country's recovery.
