Soon after Justin Trudeau announced plans to resign as the prime minister of Canada and the party chief, US President-elect Donald Trump took a swipe at him, and renewed his offer of making Canada the “51st state of the United States”.
On Jan.6, Trudeau bowed to pressure from lawmakers alarmed by his Liberal Party's poor showing in pre-election polls.
Trudeau, 53, took office in November 2015 and won reelection twice, becoming one of Canada's longest-serving prime ministers. However, his popularity started dipping two years ago amid public anger over high prices and a housing shortage, and his fortunes never recovered.

Despite calling it quits, Trudeau will still be prime minister on Jan. 20 when Trump takes office. This is until his party chooses a replacement.

Meanwhile Trump wasted no time in taking a swipe at Trudeau.

In a post on Truth Social, Trump wrote: “Many people in Canada LOVE being the 51st State. The United States can no longer suffer the massive Trade Deficits and Subsidies that Canada needs to stay afloat. Justin Trudeau knew this, and resigned. If Canada merged with the U.S., there would be no Tariffs, taxes would go way down, and they would be TOTALLY SECURE from the threat of the Russian and Chinese Ships that are constantly surrounding them. Together, what a great Nation it would be!!!”

This is not the first time that Trump has offered to make Canada the “51st state of US”.

In the last week of November 2024, Trump joked suggesting in a lighter vein at a dinner meeting he held with Trudeau that why not Canada become the 51st state of the US. He has later repeated this joke several times.
