The UCLA Center for India and South Asia has announced the prestigious Sardar Patel Award for the best doctoral dissertation on modern India, submitted at any accredited US university in 2024. The award carries a cash prize of $10,000 and honors exceptional research in the fields of history, social sciences, humanities, education, and fine arts.

The center was established in 1999; it recognizes outstanding scholarship on modern India (from 1800 to the present) and is supported by an endowment created through contributions from the Friends of the Sardar Patel Association to the UCLA Foundation.

The award pays tribute to Vallabhbhai Sardar Patel, India's first Deputy Prime Minister and Home Minister, renowned as the Architect of Modern India for his instrumental role in unifying 565 princely states into the Indian Union.

The competition is open to dissertations completed during the 2023-2024 academic year (September 1, 2023 – August 31, 2024). Eligible research must be conducted at a US-accredited university in disciplines such as history, anthropology, sociology, literature, political science, humanities, arts, or social sciences.

Applicants are required to submit their dissertation along with an abstract (500-1,000 words), a curriculum vitae (CV), and a verification form from their dissertation supervisor or department chair. All documents must be submitted in PDF format by Apr.1, 2025.

The winner will be invited to attend an award conferral ceremony in Los Angeles and will have their dissertation abstract featured on the CISA and Sardar Patel Association websites. Recipients are also expected to acknowledge the Sardar Patel Association in any future publications derived from their dissertations.
