The University System of Georgia Board of Regents has named Hitesh Handa as a Regents’ Entrepreneur. This honor recognizes faculty members who successfully transform research into commercial applications.

Handa, an associate professor and distinguished faculty fellow in the College of Engineering at the University of Georgia (UGA), has developed nitric oxide-releasing biomaterials designed to prevent infections and blood clots in medical implants.

An innovator in biomedical engineering, he has also co-founded two startups, including Nytricx Inc., and holds eight patents, with 25 more pending. His work has attracted over $5.5 million in federal commercialization grants from agencies such as the Department of Defense and the National Institutes of Health.

As the director of the Biointerface Translation and Engineering Center, Handa plays a key role in advancing medical technologies. He has been recognized as a senior member of the National Academy of Inventors and was named UGA Entrepreneur of the Year in 2021.

Beyond his research, Handa actively mentors students and startups while participating in industry events like the Georgia Bio Life Sciences Summit.

“I am immensely grateful to my mentors, mentees, supportive colleagues and staff members, collaborators, UGA’s leadership, Innovation Gateway and my family for their unwavering support and dedication in making this achievement possible,” said Handa.

“Receiving this title is a tremendous honor that highlights the significance of our combined efforts and motivates me to keep pursuing excellence. I am committed to enhancing health care by bridging the gap between clinicians and researchers,” he added.

Handa’s appointment, approved earlier this month includes a $10,000 cash award and marks him as one of five UGA faculty members to receive the Regents’ Entrepreneur designation.

Handa holds a Ph.D. and M.S. in materials science and engineering from Wayne State University and a B.S. in polymer science and chemical technology from Delhi College of Engineering, India.
