Prisha Patel, an Indian-origin student at the University of Kentucky’s College of Design and Lewis Honors College, has been named a Gaines Fellow for the 2025-26 academic year. Patel is one of 12 undergraduate students selected for the prestigious Gaines Fellowship Program in the Humanities, which recognizes academic excellence, research ability, and a commitment to addressing public issues.
“Being awarded the Gaines Fellowship is truly an immense honor. I am beyond grateful and ecstatic to be selected for this opportunity as a first-generation student. Coming from a mother who has always said, ‘anything is possible,’ I have been instilled with this mindset. This opportunity is a perfect example of this expression. I hope this experience gives me a deeper insight into my studies in architecture and the applications of intersectionality within it,” said Patel.
Sharing her excitement on LinkedIn, Patel wrote, "This is a highly competitive program by the Gaines Center for the Humanities, as only twelve UK undergraduate students are selected each academic year. I am immensely grateful for this opportunity and beyond excited for these next two years!"
The Gaines Fellowship is a two-year program that includes rigorous coursework, independent research, and a community-focused jury project. In their senior year, fellows complete a thesis, which they must defend before a faculty panel. Beyond academics, the program offers field trips, lectures, and other enriching activities.
The Gaines Center for the Humanities, established in 1984, fosters interdisciplinary learning and leadership development. As a fellow, Patel will engage in a range of experiences aimed at broadening her academic and civic perspectives.
