The UK government has reappointed economist Swati Bhingra as an external member to the Monetary Policy Committee (MPC), extending her term for another three years.
Dhingra, an associate professor of economics at the London School of Economics (LSE), was initially appointed to the MPC in August 2022. Her current term, set to end on August 8, 2025, has been extended for another three years, allowing her to serve until August 8, 2028.
Dhingra’s research focuses on economic performance, trade policy and labor markets. She is an associate of LSE’s Centre for Economic Performance and has received funding from the Economic and Social Research Council, the European Research Council and UK Research and Innovation. In 2019, she received the Office for National Statistics’ Research Excellence People’s Choice Award.
Since January 2023, she has served as director of the Review of Economic Studies. She has also been a member of the UK’s Trade Modelling Review Expert Panel and LSE’s Economic Diplomacy Commission.
Reappointments to the MPC are not automatic and are assessed individually, according to the Governance Code for Public Appointments. The Chancellor makes the final decision on external appointments.
The MPC, an independent body within the Bank of England, is responsible for setting the UK’s monetary policy. It consists of the bank’s governor, three deputy governors, the chief economist and four external members. External members, appointed by the Chancellor, can serve up to two three-year terms.
