Amidst escalating tension between the two South Asian neighbours, in the aftermath of the horrific terrorist attack in Pahalgam, UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres on April 29 spoke with the Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and India’s External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar.
His spokesperson said the Secretary-General underscored the need to avoid confrontation that could result in tragic consequences during the two calls, noting the importance of pursuing justice and accountability for these attacks through lawful means.

“The Secretary-General noted the importance of pursuing justice and accountability for these attacks through lawful means,” the UN statement said. This was the first call that Guterres made to the two leaders after the April 22 terrorist attack.
As many as 26 people, including one Nepalese national, lost their lives. The Secretary-General reiterated his strong condemnation of the 22 April terrorist attack in Jammu and Kashmir, it said.
“The Secretary-General also expressed his deep concern at rising tensions between India and Pakistan and underscored the need to avoid a confrontation that could result in tragic consequences. He offered his Good Offices to support de-escalation efforts,” said the spokesperson of the Secretary General in a readout of the call.
