Univ of Iowa names Vikas Dudeja surgery chair

Dudeja brings expertise in pancreatic cancer research, surgical innovation, and medical leadership.

The University of Iowa Carver College of Medicine has appointed Vikas Dudeja as chair and department executive officer of the Department of Surgery following a national search. 

His appointment, effective June 30, 2025 is pending approval from the Iowa Board of Regents.

Dudeja, a recognized expert in pancreatic and hepatobiliary cancers, currently serves as a tenured professor and director of the Division of Surgical Oncology at The University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB). 

His research focuses on pancreatic cancer pathobiology and innovative treatment strategies. He leads two multi-institutional clinical trials on novel therapies for pancreatitis and has received funding from the National Institutes of Health, the Department of Defense, and Veterans Affairs merit awards.

“I am delighted to welcome Dr. Dudeja to Iowa as he is an exceptional surgeon-scientist who will bring a wealth of expertise to UI Health Care,” said Denise Jamieson, vice president for medical affairs and the Tyrone D. Artz Dean of the Carver College of Medicine.

"I’m honored and excited to join the University of Iowa Health Care team," says Dudeja. "I look forward to working alongside my colleagues to provide exceptional surgical care, train the next generation of surgeons, and continue research to find innovative cures,” Dudeja said. 

Dudeja completed his general surgery residency at the University of Minnesota and a fellowship in surgical oncology at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center. He earned his medical degree from the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS). He is an elected leader in multiple surgical organizations and serves as an associate editor for several medical journals.
