The University of Chicago marked the 10th anniversary of its Center in Delhi on Dec 13, with the launch of the Institute for Climate and Sustainable Growth in India, aiming to tackle the dual challenges of climate change and sustainable development.
The Institute, first unveiled in Chicago on October 30, 2024, will leverage the University’s academic resources and partnerships to focus on climate economics, advanced energy technologies, and climate systems engineering. Its goal is to balance the urgent need for climate action with sustainable growth, officials said.
"Families in India and around the world aspire for a better life, and inexpensive energy is key to the growth that unlocks it," said Michael Greenstone, the Institute’s director and Milton Friedman Professor in Economics. "The Institute’s aim is to find ways to balance these two goals, recognizing that both are critical to our well-being. We look forward to building on a shared legacy of progress in working with Indian leaders to further this work.”
The launch event included keynote addresses from India’s chief economist V. Anantha Nageswaran and Odisha Chief Secretary Manoj Ahuja, along with a panel discussion featuring Greenstone and Tata Power CEO Praveer Sinha. The Delhi Center, established in 2014, has facilitated collaboration in areas such as liberal arts, public policy, science, and technology. Reflecting on its achievements, Supratik Guha, faculty director of the Center, said the milestone is “not merely a celebration of past achievements but a springboard for the future.”
“Leveraging the momentum of initiatives like the US-India Initiative on Critical and Emerging Technologies (iCET), we aim to deepen our partnerships across academia, industry, and government to address the pressing challenges of our time, including climate change, sustainable development, and equitable access to education,” Guha added.
The University of Chicago has worked with government and industry partners in 11 Indian states, with more than two dozen projects addressing policy challenges in energy, economics, and technology.
“This milestone affirms our commitment to fostering impactful collaboration between UChicago and India,” said Leni Chaudhuri, the Center’s executive director.
