Indian Minister for Education Dharmendra Pradhan met with a delegation from the University of Southampton and the British Council in India on Jan.30 to discuss the progress of the university’s upcoming Delhi NCR campus.
The meeting, held in New Delhi, was attended by higher education secretary Vineet Joshi, University of Southampton president and vice-chancellor Mark E. Smith, and British Council India country director Alison Barrett, among other officials.
Pradhan emphasized that the University of Southampton’s Delhi NCR campus—its first in India—would provide high-quality education driven by research, innovation, and real-world applications. He noted that the initiative supports the Indian government’s Study in India program and aligns with the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020’s vision of internationalizing education.

“As a globally top-100 university and the first foreign institution to establish a campus in India, the University of Southampton Delhi NCR campus will provide high-quality education rooted in research, innovation, and real-world applications for both Indian and international students,” a statement said.
In August 2024, the University of Southampton became the first UK university to receive a license from the Indian government to establish a comprehensive campus in India. The Delhi NCR campus aims to bridge academic expertise with industry needs, preparing students for global challenges, the university stated.
