All U.S. government offices in India, including US consulates in India, will be closed on Jan. 9 in observance of the federal government closure for the funeral of former President Jimmy Carter.

Applicants with appointments for U.S. citizen services or visa interviews on that day have been notified via email about rescheduling options.

This closure follows an executive order issued in honor of the 39th president of the United States, marking a day of remembrance for President Carter.

In other news, U.S. Ambassador to India Eric Garcetti announced in December 2024 that the U.S. is on track to open a new Consulate in Bengaluru later this month, further strengthening diplomatic ties.

Additionally, starting Jan. 1, the U.S. Embassy in India introduced new rules for scheduling and rescheduling nonimmigrant visa appointments. Applicants are now permitted to reschedule their appointments once without incurring additional charges. However, if the rescheduled appointment is missed or a second reschedule is required, applicants will need to book a new appointment and repay the application fee.
