US singer Mary Millben sings Indian national anthem; extends Republic Day wishes

Millben, a strong supporter of India, has consistently lauded Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s leadership and efforts to promote peace globally.

Celebrated African-American actress and singer Mary Millben extended her wishes to India as it celebrates its 76th Republic Day on Jan.26 by singing the Indian National Anthem.  

“To His Excellency @narendramodi, Her Excellency @rashtrapatibhvn, the Indian Allied Forces, my beloved India, and Indian communities across the world, Happy 76th Republic Day! Let’s sing together!" she said in a social media post.

Millben, a strong supporter of India, has consistently lauded Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s leadership and efforts to promote peace globally. In 2023, she performed the Indian National Anthem at the Ronald Reagan Building in Washington, D.C., where she made headlines by touching PM Modi’s feet as a mark of respect.

Her connection with India goes back to 2020, when she performed the devotional song Om Jai Jagdish Hare during Diwali celebrations. Millben, a former White House Presidential Appointee under President George W. Bush, has performed for several world leaders, including three U.S. presidents. Through her music, she continues to advocate for peace and cross-cultural friendship.

Meanwhile, as India marks its Republic Day, the grand parade at Kartavya Path in New Delhi showcased the country’s military strength and cultural diversity. President Droupadi Murmu addressed the nation on the eve of Republic Day, continuing the annual tradition. The President also spoke about 75 years of the Constitution, saying it has guided the path of our progress. “The composition of our Constituent Assembly was also a testimony to our republican values,” she said.

The Republic Day  parade, which commenced with Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to the National War Memorial, saw Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto as the Chief Guest. Around 10,000 special guests witnessed the spectacle, which included a march past by the Indonesian National Armed Forces, cultural performances, and a breathtaking fly-past by 40 aircraft and helicopters.

The Republic Day celebrations concluded with the national anthem and the release of balloons carrying banners celebrating 75 years of India’s Constitution.
